How it all began

Ulster Banking Company was established in 1836 to provide bank services in Belfast and the principal trading towns of Ulster.

1836

Ulster Bank banknotes started circulating in 1836, and are still issued today.

1860

Ulster Bank opened its first branch outside the province of Ulster in Sligo in 1860 and a year later was the first Belfast bank to open a branch in Dublin.

In 1968 Ulster Bank installed the first cash dispensers in Ireland at branches in Belfast, Dublin and Ballymena.

Ulster Bank introduced the Henri Hippo children’s money box in 1981 and launched Henri’s Super Savers Club in 1984.
